Spa pools are not just places of relaxation; they are an investment in your well-being. But without proper maintenance, they can become breeding grounds for harmful bacteria. With the health of people at stake, it’s essential to maintain clean and safe spa water year-round. This guide will uncover the hidden dangers of contaminated spa water and share tips for proper sanitation.
The Link Between Legionnaires’ Disease and Dirty Spa Water
A recent health warning from Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand) has highlighted a worrying increase in Legionnaires’ Disease cases caused by dirty spa pools. Out of 10 reported cases in a recent year, eight were directly linked to contaminated spa water. The risk was also highlighted by RNZ.
Legionella bacteria thrive in warm, moist environments, making spas a perfect breeding ground when not properly maintained. These bacteria can enter the body through inhaling mist or droplets, leading to severe flu-like symptoms or pneumonia—which can be fatal for those over 50, smokers, or individuals with weakened immune systems.
Why Sanitisers Are A Must-Have
Microorganisms and algae thrive and multiply in wet, warm conditions. Spas provide those conditions from the combination of warm water, bather load (e.g. body oils, perspiration, skin cells and bacteria), rainwater, dust and contaminants such as insects.
The use of effective sanitising products in the water provides a safe and comfortable environment. A background level of sanitiser is needed alongside a weekly shock /oxidizing treatment. Unfortunately, some companies tell people they don’t need to use these sanitizing chemicals…..and that is simply untrue and unsafe.
- Beware of companies claiming you don’t need sanitizing chemicals. This is false, and it is unsafe.
